Cochecho River Watershed Restoration Planning, Strafford County, NH

We worked with the Cochecho River Watershed Coalition (CRWC) to complete three major documents as part of a Section 319 Watershed Assistance Grant from New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

Cochecho River Watershed Environmental Quality Report – A comprehensive evaluation of all water quality monitoring data collected by CRWC from 1999 to 2004 were analyzed for the environmental quality report. Other available natural resource data were also collected for inclusion in the report.  Background information collected during three days of river tours with stakeholders provided an important first-hand look at problem areas and areas of restoration and management opportunity.

Cochecho River Watershed Restoration and Implementation Plan – The plan is long-term guidance document for the coalition and was developed after a year of preparation and planning.  This process included stakeholder surveys, interviews and multiple advisory committee meetings.  Watershed goals, objective and actions were developed based on the stakeholder meeting process.   A total of 86 actions were crafted to address management, restoration, outreach, and supplemental natural resource evaluation issues.

A five year Monitoring Plan was then developed for the coalition.  This included enhancement of the volunteer water quality monitoring efforts of the coalition and a plan for undertaking monitoring actions developed in the Restoration Plan for trash surveys, biological assessments, riparian assessments, and restoration surveys.  Actions are now being carried out by the coalition through a variety of funding sources.
